Hula Hoop Party Invitations and Decorations

Set the stage for your hooping party with creative invitations and hula hoop inspired decorations.

• Cut circles or rings from cardstock paper , one for each guest. Use a hole punch to make a hole in the ring. Then cut a stick figure person from another color. Before you put the invitation pieces together write the party details on the ring. Glue the stick figure so that it hangs down into the hoop.
  Add a decorative ribbon to the hole (see image )
• Then gently fold it in half or personally deliver the invitations with a Jones’ Soda.
• I like the idea of combining the hula hoops with a cheerful daisy theme; kind of like a nice summer day – fill your party space with bright yellow, grass green and white balloons.
• Gather bunches of 5 balloons together and tie them to a paper cover brick weight or bags of color coordinated jelly beans.
• Continue the daisy theme with a fresh daisy filled vase centerpiece and matching tableware.
• Use a clothesline or string between to trees, to hang the letters of the guest of honor’s name or “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” using brightly colored plastic clothespins.
• You can also use a 50’s decorating theme and ask your guests to dress up in fifties fashion.
• Try a “groovy” music festival tie dye decorating style. Either way you just need standard balloons, streamers and party ware because most of this party is based on the hula hoop activities. Just keep it bright and fun!

Hula Hoop Party Games and Crafts

As you know, preteens and teenagers can be particular, so it’s best to consult with the guest of honor before preparing the activities for this older kid party.

• Hula hoops for everyone are a must and it’s tons of fun to have the kids make their own. If you are hosting a large group of kids, you and your daughter may want to make the hoops ahead of time. Party guests can personalize their hoops with colored electrical tape, duct tape, hemp string or yarn. Here’s a great hula hoop making site.
• Hire an instructor or group of hula hoop performers to come to the party. See listings online, check with a local fitness center or college.

• Make sure you have a nice loud sound system all ready to go with kid selected music,because hooping is just more fun with music.
• Once the hoops are made and decorated, the group can practice and have fun for awhile while “hanging out”, snacking etc.
• Make a video of the hula hooping party guests and can send it to them after the party.
• Kids 9-13 may want to play some hula challenge games…
  The longest standing “hooper”, best combination of hoop tricks , or a follow the leader type of game.
• If you have plenty of space, divide into teams for a “Pass the Hoop” relay race game.
  Where the object of the game is to be the first team to pass the hoop all the way down the line and back . The tricky part is that the players are actually spinning the hoop on their arms while they passing it down the line.
• Roll hoops through a slalom course made with cones or chairs…fastest time wins!
• Use small hoops to play a giant ring toss game. The targets can be a garbage can, chair or even a person, as long as they are wearing safety gear like a bike helmet — kids love this game!
• Depending on the length of your party and whether you have a visiting hoop instructor , you may want to provide the supplies for a fun craft activity like hemp braiding or a decorate your own Flip-Flop craft. Set the supplies on tables with patterns or provide instructions. 1-2-3 Party Tip: When setting up craft supplies try putting beads and smaller items in muffin tins at the table. If you’re not sure whether you’ll need this activity wait to open the packages so that you can return your purchase at the craft store.

Hula Hoop Party Food and Favors

Kids this age usually have big appetites with easy to please palettes. Ask the birthday child what they’d like to serve.

• Serve a summer barbecue menu with burgers, hot dogs, chips and watermelon.
• Platters of sub sandwiches are always a hit. Keep the condiments chilled and on the side and provide knives for spreading.
• Beverages can be anything from lemonade to soda – Jones drinks and Gatorade  or a fun beverage station where the kids can mix their own drinks is always fun. Provide Italian syrups, fruit juices, seltzer and ice cubes.
• Bubble tea is popular with teens and can be made with flavored syrups for more fun. — see the video below for instructions.
• Fruit kabobs and veggie platter with dip.
• Ice cream sandwiches fit the bill for teens.

• If you are hosting the party at home and you have a helper…take photos of each guest hula hooping and then send the helper inside to make copies on the computer. Otherwise, include the photos with the thank you notes.

This might be hard to believe but the recipe before you is actually recommended when you’re trying to watch your fat content. Plus, it will probably leave you wondering, is that it? Really? Just a box cake mix and can of soda? The answer is yes, that’s it! I can’t tell you the number of compliments I’ve received every time I bake these cupcakes. In fact, you can use a normal size cake pan and serve it by the slice if you so choose. That means the options are endless as you’re planning for your next party.

You’ll Need:

• 1 box cake (any flavor)
• 1 12oz. can of soda (any flavor)
• Mixing bowl and whisk
• Cupcake pan and liners
• Frosting (any flavor) – optional

Directions:
1. Preheat oven according to the directions provided on the back of the box cake you selected.
2. Empty box cake mix into mixing bowl.
3. Pour 12oz. can of soda into mixing bowl.
3a. That’s it. Do NOT add any other ingredients such as water, oil or eggs even though the box tells you to do so.
4. Whisk rapidly for 1-2 minutes.
5. Line cupcake pan with liners.
6. Pour batter into cupcake liners about 2/3 full
7. Bake for the number of minutes as indicated on the back of the box cake you selected. The number of minutes may differ if you opt to bake a cake instead of individual cupcakes.
8. Allow to cool and then frost and sprinkle!

And now, I leave you with some cake + soda recommendations. Some friends and I all took a combo and prepared these to share one night. It was so much fun and so easy to do! In fact, we now joke that we are “cupcake scientists”. Who knows, maybe this could be the next big activity at your Science-themed party.

This fun competitive party game is  simple to make and kids think it’s a blast! Play this ring toss game at an outer space alien, a superhero or astronaut party. Or with the suggestions provided below you can coordinate this game to almost any party theme.

Game Materials:

• Three – five empty plastic or glass bottles
• Construction paper
• Markers
• Tape
• Water
• Wooden embroidery hoops from the craft store -  size will vary depending on the size of the bottles
• Masking tape
• Scissors

Before The Party:

1. Fold the construction paper in half.
2. Trace a simple rocket on one side of the folded paper.
3. Cut the rocket from the paper, leaving a portion along the fold so that you have two rockets to wrap around the bottle.
4. Repeat this for each bottle.
5. Mark point values on the rockets (optional).
6. Fill the bottles part way with water to stabilize them.
7. Wrap the paper rockets around the bottles and secure them with tape.
8. Separate the embroidery rings and decorate with tape (optional).
   We just use the inner rings, not the hoops with the hardware. But that too is optional.

Party Time:

1. Set up the rockets in any formation for play.
2. Mark the “tossing line” with tape on the floor or if you are outside use stones, sidewalk chalk or a stick.
3. Players will take turns throwing the rings from the the “tossing line” attempting to ring as many rockets as they can and/or getting the highest score.

You can adapt this game to a variety of themes just by changing the image you use to decorate the bottles.

• Hosting a princess party? How about ring the castle tower.
• Ring a Shark for an ocean or shark party.

How to make Ladybug birthday party invitations – you can do it!

These biscuits are a favorite pirate party recipe, but can also be served at a tea party, western party (gold coins), space party (meteors) or with the addition of food color they’ll work with most party themes.

You’ll Need:

• 3/4 cup softened butter
• 2 cups grated cheese
• 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
• 1 ½  cups of flour
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• Electric mixer
• Round glass or cookie cutter
• Parchment paper or non-stick spray
• Rolling pin
• Cookie sheet

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
2. In a small bowl stir together the flour and salt.
3. In a larger bowl combine the softened butter, cheese and Worcestershire sauce and beat with an electric mixer until the ingredients are well blended.
   Tip: If you use grated Parmesan cheese do not add the salt.
4. Stir in the dry ingredients.
5. Place a sheet of parchment paper on the counter or lightly flour the surface.

• Make your own bubble styled invitations using card stock paper cut in small and large circles. Glue the smaller circle offset on the edge of the larger circle. Write your baby’s age on the small circle and the party details on the large circle. For an added touch, lightly dust the invitations with super fine poly-glitter which you can find at a craft store.
• Begin your decorating with a color palette which makes it easier to purchase balloons, plates streamers  and other party items.
  Both pastel or primary colors work well with this party theme. I tend to use three colors when decorating for a party. In this case pink, yellow and light green or red, blue and yellow.

• Set the table with matching paper or plastic party-ware. A disposable table cover will be easier in the long run or you can use a white sheet that can be washed when the party is over.
• Include some personalized party items with the birthday child’s name or photo on a few of the table items. Order them from popular on-line party suppliers.
• Run the party streamers down the center of the table and use frosted cupcakes in a stand for a centerpiece.

Minnie Mouse Invitations and Decorations

It’s amazing how far three circles and  the color pink can get you when you’re decorating for a mini or Mickey Mouse party!

• If you’re like me and without a die-cut machine, you can easily trace and draw mini mouse shapes in a variety of sizes by creating patterns with dinner plates, butter dishes, water glasses, juice container tops, etc.
• Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to trace and make Minnie’s bow.
• Hang your own easy to make Minnie Mouse dangling paper streamers from the ceiling and/or a pennant banner (pictured right)
• Imagine how excited your daughter’s friends will be when you hand-deliver note card invitations shaped like Minnie Mouse with a real hair bow on the invitation.
• Make a cute “bowtique” poster for your front door with one of your traced Minnie Mouse cut outs -  a balloon bouquet by the front door is a nice touch and let your guests know that they in for some fun!
• To make life a little easier on yourself purchase a few store-bought Minnie Mouse party supplies combined with solid colored table items. Tip:  I always cover a children’s party table with a white sheet instead of a disposable plastic or paper tablecloth. It’s easy to wash and can work with any theme.
• Run a few streamers down the length of the table and add scattered matching confetti, sequins or candy.
• Set your table with cake plates, silverware, cups, etc.
• The last step of your table decorating is to add the centerpiece of your choice. My favorite easy go-to  centerpieces are:  a tower of cupcakes, a stuffed Minnie Mouse,  open picture books,  a vase of tissue flowers or small balloons on stems.
• For this party theme, it would look adorable to make a “bowtique” display centerpiece by attaching several blows to a cupcake tower as though they’re on display at the store.

Minnie Mouse Games and Crafts

While it’s great to have a pretty table and well decorated home, the important part of a party for kids will be the games,  crafts and fun activities! These ideas will be as fun as Mickey’s Clubhouse!

• Welcome your guests with their own pair of Mickey Mouse ears. You’ll find plenty of tutorials online, here’s one of my favorite DIY Mickey Mouse ears…
• Cookie decorating is always a hit regardless of the theme. For this party, use a Mickey Mouse cookie cutter to prepare sugar cookies. Put white frosting in muffin tins and give each child their own wooden craft stick for spreading the frosting on the cookie. Muffin tins and ice cube trays are also  great containers for the decorating sprinkles, candy and jimmies.  Once the cookies are decorated simply put them in a bag to go home  as a make and take party favor.
• Decorating pretty bows is a must-have craft for this party, but how you do it will depend on the age of the children. For example, older kids can use fabric paint to add dots and designs on pre-made hair bows, whereas younger children will do better with fabric markers.
• Have a clubhouse cakewalk using pictures of Minnie Mouse mouse and friends.  The players walk around the circle listening to Mickey’s Clubhouse music and a small prize will be given when the name of character  whose picture there standing on is called out.
• Make your own “Pin the bow on Minnie” game,  using black poster board and pink craft foam for the bows.  You really only need to make Minnie Mouse’s head and ears for this game so don’t stress over artistic ability. Idea pictured right!
• Send the kids on a search to find Minnie’s Missing Bows (hide them around the party areas before the party)

• Make Pinwheel Sandwiches or rice krispie treats in the shape of Minnie’s head (big circle for head, two little circles for ears). Make it easier and see if you can find a Minnie/Mickey Mouse cookie cutter at your local party store.
• Serving dinner or lunch? Make pasta with “bow” shaped noodles (Farfalle noodles)! Or, let the kids decorate their own Minnie Mouse shaped pizza!

• If you’re in a crunch and want to make your life a little easier, going with a pre-bundled Minnie Mouse party favor box is a great option. They usually run around $4-$5 per guest.

4. Place the gummy hearts on the wax paper  – if there is a texture or design, keep the smooth side is face up.
5. Use the white decorating frosting tube or sandwich bag with white frosting and a snipped corner to make two dots for eyes, smile and hair.
6. Add a few dots of red frosting with a toothpick and create the spiky hair.
7. Insert red candies on the eyes.
8. Once the frosting has set a bit, place the heart faces on the frosted cupcakes. You can be done here or add the arms and legs.
9. Now insert the licorice legs, feet and arms into the cupcake frosting. Use dots of white frosting to make hands.

1-2-3 Tips:
These require quite a bit of handling, so for sanitary reasons it is best to wear plastic kitchen food prep gloves.
Pick up some clear cellophane bags from the craft store and wrap the cupcakes for party favors once the frosting has hardened a bit.
