Ladybugs Party Invitations and Decorations

• Make your own ladybug “winged” invitations using red and black cardstock paper and hand deliver them with a ladybug antennae headband (pictured below).

Ladybug Birthday Party Food and Favors

If you are serving a light lunch or snacks, feed little ladybugs food that’s fun to eat and then send them home with fun party favors.
Here are the favorites for this party theme…

• Serve kid-favorite sandwiches cut with a flower cookie cutter.
• Make bugs in a boat or on a log – which is raisins and cream cheese on celery or and apple wedge.
• Slide watermelon balls on kid-safe skewer to make fruit kabobs.
• Flower cupcakes decorated with jelly beans or other candy will be deliciously fun!
• Cherry floats or Italian sodas are fun and yummy!
• Strawberry lemonade is a ladybug favorite.
• Package up party favors  in red cups with black tissue.
• Favors could include red and black candies, red and black crayons, supplies to make a red and black pony bead necklace, hair ties, playclay with a flower cookie cutter, ladybug stickers.
• If your party has a garden touch fill small garden pots with treats or a seed packet and kid-sized gardening gloves.
• Make ladybug cookie favors using a chocolate marshmallow cookie like Mallomars, red sugar cookie wings, licorice antennae and decorator frosting features.

How to make Ladybug birthday party invitations – you can do it!

Spend a few minutes on Etsy or Pinterest and the average mom can easily feel inadequate and completely lacking in artistic ability. Even I (a reasonably crafty and creative mom) feel totally pathetic when perusing the wonderful ideas and photos from party bloggers.
If you feel a little craft-challenged, its time to “get your creativity on” with these easy to make Minnie or Mickey Mouse birthday party decorations.

Cutting perfect circles is actually harder than you would think, especially if you need to cut several. I recommend tracing cookie cutters, glassware, dishes  or even using a protractor to make your circles. You will need to cut several circles in varying sizes for this party, and while a cutting tool is not necessary, it does make things a little easier. In the interest of full disclosure, I used an EK Success Circle Scissor to cut the circles for the Minnie and Mickey Mouse party ideas -  but then again I had to cut quite a few for photos and such.

Materials Needed:
For the most part you need the same supplies to make all three Mouse Decorations …or is it Mice decor

•  Black construction paper
• Patterned card stock paper (bows for Minnie)
• Heart shaped cookie cutter (bows for Minnie)
• Objects for tracing circles, a protractor or a cutter
• White pencil
• Scissors
• Hole punch
• Glue dots
• Black yarn or ribbon (party banner)
• Sewing machine (hanging decorations)

Instructions:
Follow steps 1-5 for all three decorations but in varying sizes.

1. Measure the length of the banner that you want to make before  tracing in cutting your circles and bows.  Determine how many “Minnie Mouse”  shapes and bows you’ll need to fill the length. You want a bow or Minnie Mouse about every 3 inches to achieve the desired effect.
2. Trace appropriate size circles -mine are 4 inches for the head  and the ears are 2 1/2 inches.
3. Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to trace your bow shaped along the fold of  card stock paper.
4.  Cut all of your shapes – cut extra circles to make straw tops
5. Use glue dots to attach Minnie’s ears (small circles) to her head ( large circle).

Mickey or Minnie Mouse Party Banner

1. Use your hole punch to make holes  located around the bottom portion of the ears.  In my first attempt, my holes were placed too low on the larger circle so the ears made my mouse top-heavy causing it to flip over.  That’s why recommend you use your hole punch higher on a larger circle.  You can tell where I’ve placed my lacing holes  by looking at my photos.
2. Now it’s time to lace your Minnie (or Mickey) Mouse  has alternating with the paper bows.

Hang your party banner using thumbtacks or any other means you choose.

My niece is totally into Minnie  Mouse right now so I’ll be sending her this party banner to hang in her bedroom.  Won’t it look cute hanging in front of a window?

1-2-3 Tip:  If you feel inspired you can use a white or light colored pencil to write the birthday child’s name or age on the mouse shapes.  You may also want to add small bows to the Minnie Mouse shapes.  I felt that the bigger paper bows were effective and didn’t want to take the time to cut and glue small bows.

Minnie Mouse Bow-tastic (or Mickey Mouse) Hanging Decoration

1. Follow the same steps listed above for cutting the circles and bows.
   Each Minnie Mouse will need two bows so they look the same on both sides.
2. Use a glue stick to attack the ears and bows.
3. Prepare your sewing machine for a straight stitch and sew the Mouse heads together- be sure to sew straight down the middle and leave spaces in between.
4. Now you can hang your banners from the ceiling, light fixtures or doorways.

1. Follow the same steps listed above for cutting the circles. I suggest making the head about 2 inches and the ears about 1 inch.
2. Glue the ears to the head.
3. Fold the shape in half and cut two small slits to make the the straw hole. Insert the drinking straw through the opening.

Snowman Party Invitations and Decorations

Set the mood for your party with snowflake filled invitations and winter decor that any snowman would love to call home.

• Cut a snowman’s top hat from black cardstock paper. Use white gel pens to write the invitation details on one side of the hat and the message on the other “You’re invited for some Frosty Fun!“.  Include snowflake confetti or sequins in the envelope before sealing.
• Make lots and lots of paper snowflakes and paper chains. Begin right after Thanksgiving and you’ll have plenty for decorating walls, windows and to hang from the ceiling.
• Add white holiday lights to the paper snowflake decorations to create a festive look.
• Your party room will look like it’s piled high with snowdrifts when you drape white sheets, batting or any white fabric over your furniture.
• Make your own snowball pom-pom garland (pictured right) to decorate the ceiling and walls.

Snowman Party Games and Crafts

Keep everyone happy with a couple of games and a fun craft or two. Select your favorites from the list below.

• Set up a craft table with white paper, glitter glue and several pairs of scissors for making beautiful paper snowflakes to take home.
• Play a few rounds of  “Mitten Mayhem”.
• Play a silly challenge game where the kids perform a task while wearing mittens. Such as building  a towers of blocks, marshmallows or sugar cubes?  Or try picking up coins. If mittens are too difficult for smaller items, try gloves.
• Play a game of musical chairs where the kids have to walk like penguins!
• Make a “Stick the Carrot” on the snowman game.
• Organize an indoor relay race where players carry snowballs (marshmallows or cotton balls) with a spoon.
• Divide into teams for a snowman dress-up relay race with a hat, scarf, mittens and boots.
• With empty jars, crushed egg shells and a few other supplies older kids (6 and up) can make their own snow globes to take home.
• Younger children will enjoy a big batch of homemade white glitter play-dough, rollers and cookie cutters that coordinate with the winter snow theme.
• A sock snowmen craft will be fun for the kids to decorate during the party. To make this craft easier for a party prepare the sock bodies beforehand, use glue dots, sticky backed craft foam and fabric markers for decorating.
• In your invitation, ask guests to bring hats, mittens or scarves to the party in support of a local homeless shelter. Use markers and other supplies to decorate a paper-covered box to fill with the donations.

Snowman Party Food and Favors

For this Snowman party think cozy treats on a snowy day…

• Serve warm soup with snowman shaped sandwiches.
• Serve warm soup with snowman sandwiches.
• For sweet treats try fluffy white frosted (no vanilla) cupcakes, scoops of vanilla ice cream rolled in coconut
  (re-freeze until serving) or mini-donut snowmen.
• If you are a bit of a cookie crafter, try this wonderful melting snowman cookie!
• Fill a mitten from the dollar store with a candy cane, packet of hot cocoa, and a cookie or stickers.
• Other favors could include  snowflake stickers , a pack of Ice Cubes gum and white chocolate dipped pretzel sticks (in a plastic bag of course).
• Decorate white fudge oreos during the party or before the party with holiday themed designs.
• Or tie a snowman cookie cutter to a baggie of homemade white or light blue glitter play-dough.
• Create snowman shaped sandwiches before the party or give the kids all the sandwich fixings to create their own snowman sandwich.
• Let your guests decorate their very own snowman sugar cookie to take home as a make-and-take party favor.

When I picked up several packages of “stick-on” jewels I was disappointed to discover two things…

One, they weren’t very sticky. Two, there were way more teeny tiny jewels than I felt was needed…why don’t they just make a package of teeny tiny jewels for people with the patience to use them ,and a real package for all the rest of us?

But I quickly solved the both problems with my all time favorite, can’t do without craft supply…Glue Dots! In about 30 minutes I was able to make a party table look super fancy for eight little girls to enjoy and there was NOOOO dry time needed! I was able to use the teeny tiny jewels because Glue Dots come in a super small size and all of the jewels were secure.

Craft Materials:

• Paper party cups
• Plastic flatware (you can actually use real flatware with removable glue dots)
• Stick on jewels (sequins will work too, but not as well)
• Glue Dots – labelled craft or removable and the micro size

Directions:

1. Attach a glue dot to the back of the jewel and attach it the outside of the cups.
2. Repeat randomly around the cup.
3. Do the same with 3-4 jewels on the handle of the fork and spoon.

 1-2-3 Party Tip:
This cup doesn’t only have to hold a beverage, try using them as place holders, to serve a fun party snack crackers or sweet mix.
They’ll also make great princess party or Fancy Nancy party favor holders!

As you can see,  I am not a photographer or a paper artist. As a matter of fact, there are many more party blogs out there with gorgeous photos and truly amazing party decor ideas.  While I appreciate them and could possible be like them…I am not. I’m just a mom, auntie and Nana trying simple ideas to make parties super fun! It has worked for 25 years, so why stop now?

One of my favorite party suppliers, Birthday in a Box, just started carrying a new Space Alien birthday party theme that is out of this world! One glimpse of the playful aliens and I was instantly inspired to write an entire 1-2-3 party theme with UFO cupcakes, alien crafts and fun party games. So even if you don’t purchase any supplies, you can still plan and Alien birthday party that’s as easy as 1-2-3!

Space Alien Party Invitations and Decorations

With fun invitations and special touches added to your party decorations, your guests will know they’ve landed on a planet of fun!

• Handcraft UFO spaceship invitations with gray card stock paper, jewel sticker dots and gel pens.
• Make plastic Easter egg aliens with wiggle eyes, permanent markers, pom-poms and chenille stems. Roll up a note with the invitation details and slip it in the Alien egg for hand delivery.
• Puzzle invitations are also fun – you can pick up blank puzzles at your local craft store.
• Welcome guests to another planet by surrounding the entry door with green and blue streamers and balloons.
• With a little creativity , make a spaceship entry door using paper and paint.
• Sidewalk chalk can be used to make alien footprints leading to the front door.

• If your party is outdoors, use pool noodles and inflatable toys to create and “other worldly” obstacle course game.

All that space travel can cause partying aliens to work up an appetite…here are some favorite party treats!

• Make purple blueberry smoothies or green Italian sodas.
• A bowl of white grape-juice punch will look awesome with a purple ice ring UFO (unidentified floating object) and dry ice smoke…kids and adults love the special effect but be sure to follow all safety precautions.
• Fruit slices, vegetables and toothpicks are perfect for making edible Aliens.
• Use vanilla wafer cookies, gumdrops and frosting to make spaceship-topped cupcakes.
• Individually wrapped planet popcorn balls or meteor cake pops make unique party favors.
• Other space alien favorite goody bag favors include high-bounce balls, solar system stickers, wind-up toys, Pop-Rocks candy.

These ladybug party headbands will set the mood for your super party! Make the headbands before the party or prepare the supplies ahead of time and help the children make their own as they arrive. Either way they aren’t difficult and are so cute. Don’t you agree?

Before the Party:

Make these ladybug headbands before the party for the children to wear as they arrive. Or, if you’d like the children to make this craft when they arrive, prepare the supplies and pieces before hand and be sure you have a helper. Little hands will have a bit of a hard time but could certainly attach stickers.

1. Cut a strip of red craft foam for each child.
2. Make a hole on both ends of the strip.
3. Trace a circle on the back of the black sticky foam. A frosting container lid is the perfect size.
   
4. Cut the circle in half.
5. Attach a half circle in the center of the headband at the bottom edge.
6. Use the glue dots to attach the eyes.
7. Cut and glue a small piece of yarn for the smile.
   
8. Color the ladybug dots on the read part of the headband or use black dot stickers.
9. Make two holes right above the ladybug head and insert the chenille stem and twist to secure.
10. Coil the chenille stem antennae around a pencil to curl.
    
11. Attach heart stickers or pom-poms to the tips if you wish. The antennae will flop forward but when the ladybug headband is worn, they will stand straight.
12. Now loop the yarn through the hole to make ties.

Party Time:

Help the children follow the steps above. Or, simply tie the headbands on your little ladybug guests as they arrive.

Dinosaur Party Invitations and Decorations

Set the stage for party fun with these homespun ideas! The possibilities are endless when decorating for this theme and this list is vast. Just pick what works for your budget, time and space.

• Make your own dinosaur invitations with cardstock paper.
• Cut dinosaur footprints from the paper. Write the party details on one side of the footprint and decorate the other side with stickers and a message.
• Hand delivering invitations can be fun….fill large plastic eggs (dinosaur eggs) with candy and the invitation tucked inside. Then let the birthday child deliver them to friends!
• Decorate the party area with standard balloons, streamers and matching dinosaur party props to enhance the theme.
• Wrap bricks with brown paper to make balloon weights.
• Use sidewalk chalk or paper, to draw giant dino-footprints leading to the party entrance and through the room.
• Create a prehistoric dinosaur environment with paper or real plants and rocks made with crumpled browm paper grocery bags. Tip: Find rolls of brown paper in the paint section of the hardware store or at a parent teacher store.
• Hang dinosaur posters (teacher store) on the walls and windows.
• Use plenty of dinosaur toys as props.
• Hang green “vine”streamers from the ceiling above the table and on the backs of chairs.
• Cover your table with green or brown butcher paper and paper dinosaur footprints

Dinosaur Birthday Party Games and Crafts

This is a such a popular party for kids from 3-8 that the list of fun is very long.Select the ideas that work best for your party location and the ages of the children.

• Greet your guests with custom dinosaur tee-shirts or visors made with dinosaur paint sponges and fabric paint.
• Bury small dinosaurs and filled plastic eggs in a big box of shredded paper. Allow junior paleontologists to take turn digging to find prize.
• New twist on a party favorite- Play a dinosaur version of “Pin the Tail on the Donkey” with “Pin the Tooth on the Tyrannosaurus”.
• Send little paleontologists on a search for hidden dinosaurs – toys or flashcards will do!

Dinosaur Birthday Party Food and Favors

Fun- to-eat snacks, treats for “sweet-a-vores”and party favors that are sure to please.

• Cut kid-friendly sandwiches with dinosaur cookie cutters. Favorites are cream cheese and deli slices, cheese, PBJ (check for allergies)
• Serve warm teriyaki chicken drumsticks.
• Kids love dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets served with tasty dipping sauce.
• Herbivores will delight in veggies and fruit kabobs made with kid-safe skewers. Tips: I cut the skewers in half and cut the sharp tip or use coffee stir sticks.
• Serve chocolate lava cakes with dinosaur sprinkles in the lava.
• Prepare dinosaur egg topped cupcakes with chocolate frosting, toasted coconut and speckled Jelly Belly jelly beans.
• Another easy cupcake can be made with cookie crumb dirt and a gummy dinosaur candy on top.
• Everyone goes home happy with dinosaur themed party favors like plastic eggs filled with dinosaur fruit snacks and stickers, a dinosaur cookie and cookie cutter, or my personal party favorite which is a container of homemade play dough with a dinosaur cookie cutter.
• Add homemade fossils for the kids to break open when they get home.
• Mix up a batch of coffee ground play-dough and make your own dinosaur bone party favors with the birthday child.

Halloween is loaded with so many sweet treats in kid-tempting packages that healthy snacks don’t stand a chance. But when these spider snack cups are filled with trail mix, grape clusters, sliced vegetables or crackers and cheese, you may find sugar-hyped party goblins willing to pack in a little nutrition to balance things out a bit.

Craft Supplies:

• Black baking cups
• Plastic wiggle eyes
• Black craft paper
• Glue Dots or glue stick

Craft Directions:

1. Fold a sheet of the black paper in half. Use a pencil to draw four straight, or bent legs.
2. Cut unfold the legs to make eight legs. You may need to cut the legs in half to manipulate them correctly.
3. Use Glue Dots to secure the legs on the bottom of the cupcake liner.
4. Attach the wiggle eyes on the front of the cup with Glue Dots.
5. Fill the snack cup with trail mix, cheese cubes and pretzels, fruit, veggies and dip.

When I had my three nephews and niece over for an Auntie “Sprinkles” sleepover adventure, I knew an activity or two would be in order. Coming up with a craft was not a problem for me, but finding a craft that would engage all of the kids ranging ages 4-11 was a little tricky. These decorated flashlights turned out to be the perfect solution! My fabulous husband picked up the flashlights at the dollar store (for a buck each of course) along with some cheap batteries. I had the pony beads, stickers, glue dots etc. in my office, but you can get these supplies at the dollar store as well. I would have preferred solid colored plastic flashlights, but when you shop at the dollar store…you get what you get and you don’t complain! The kids were so creative and thrilled with the end results. The youngest, held his flashlight all night and even slept with it under his pillow. Soooo cute!

If you’re throwing a slumber party, regardless of the kids ages, this craft is ideal because…

• The flashlight provides kids who are less than thrilled about the sleepover part with a little security.
• Once it’s “light-out” time the kids can play flashlight tag on the ceiling.
• You have a party craft and party favor rolled up into one inexpensive activity!

Craft Materials:

• One flashlight per child ( dollar store )
• Decorations
  Stickers, craft foam letters, ribbon, pony beads, lanyard, buttons, stick on gems
• Glue Dots for extra stickiness if needed
• Permanent Gel pens if the flashlight has a smooth surface
• Batteries

1. Insert batteries and test flashlights first. You may want to do this before you leave the store, or buy an extra just in case. You are buying cheap flashlights after all and wouldn’t want one disappointed kiddo when the lights go out.
2. Open and prepare all supplies first. I put small items in bowls, paper plates or cupcake tins to  keep the mess to a minimum.
3. We used the tie that came with the flashlights to string pony beads, but if your flashlight has a loop on the end you can use ribbon or lanyard.
4. Then just let the kids decorate as they desire, using glue dots kept items from falling off our textured flashlights. This should not be a problem however if you can find smooth plastic flashlights.

After making the “Ghost of Black Beard” Halloween decoration there was some extra white fabric. Using the same balloon technique and wiggle eyes this almost too cute to creepy mummy was created. Try making three one purple, one white and green and adding bright glow sticks or flashlights to the oatmeal box for an eerie glow. Display them on the table, by the front door, or in a corner with creepy Halloween spider web.

Craft Materials

•  Green balloon
• Strips of white fabric or crepe paper streamers
• Empty oatmeal container
• Wiggle eyes (not shown)
• White construction paper
• Glue-dots (removable)
• Scissors
• Black permanent marker (not shown)

Craft Directions:

1. Cover the oatmeal box with white paper using glue-dots or tape.
2. Inflate the balloon and tie the end.
3. Rest the balloon in the oatmeal container with the tied part inside and secure it in the container and add a few Glue Dots around the edges.
4. Cut or tear strips of fabric.
5. Place one strip of the fabric over the balloon and secure it in place with a glue dot or two. Then tuck the ends underneath the container using glue-dots there as well. This step will hold your balloon in place.
6. Place a glut-dot on the end of a strip of fabric and stick it to the back of the mummy.
7. Start loosely wrapping the fabric around the the balloon and container, using glue-dots to attach one strip to another until you’ve achieved the look you want.
8. Add wiggle eyes and draw a mouth that is partially hidden (let the marker dry before touching the fabric).

• Try placing a flashlight pointed upwards inside the oatmeal container so that the ghost has an eerie glow.
• Glue dots will pop the balloon so be sure where you want to lace the eyes and fabric.
